Silver (Easy Prey)

The fable tells of a hunter who waited patiently by a bush for his prey to appear. And there it stood: absorbed in its natural world, confident and calm. Crouched behind the bush he raised his rifle, set the stock against his shoulder, focused his scope — and saw the red eye of his prey. In the very lens of that deer’s eye, the fearful, insecure being that inhabited him was reflected back. The alpha, trying to prove to himself he could take away that animal’s freedom — a freedom he himself did not possess. He froze there, caught in the iris that watched him and mirrored back the grim man within. The hunter had been hunted. In the reflection of every piece of cutlery set into this head, each of us can see ourselves.
